Louise's trip to Nuuk and Ilulissat

Louise Fruekilde tells Travel by Heart-Greenland.

Nuuk, peace to enjoy.

My husband and I were both busy leading up to the trip, it had been a hectic time, but when we got off the plane in Nuuk, I remember this special fresh air that I later look back on as an indication of which trip it would be.

Sailing tours in Nuuk.

Already in the evening we sail out over the fjord in Nuuk, together with the friends we will be staying with for the first few days. The sun is shining, it’s cool, but the rays are warm.
Nuuk is magnificent and right there on deck, the tranquility and fresh air become even more apparent. For the next 12 days, nature will be more present than ever.

They say that the further you sail into the fjord in Nuuk, the more ice you come across. There’s something calming about experiencing Greenland from the water, and I know that there are several organizers in Nuuk that offer different boat trips.

We see whales in Nuuk.

For example, one evening we sail 50 kilometers out and eat at a restaurant afterwards. One of the hallmarks of our boat trips will be looking out over the water. Each time we are rewarded with the sight of whales.

The walks in Nuuk lead us to “The Board”, museum visits and in the city there is an immediate calmness that permeates the body. We get to see what we want to see and more. We relax because it’s less busy than we’re used to at home, and it’s nice to be a part of for a few days.

Ilulissat – an encounter with the icebergs.

We had been told that Ilulissat would be different from Nuuk. Still, I am overwhelmed by the icebergs, the peaks, the ice, the nature – a different nature than the one we experienced in Nuuk.

“Do you want to sit inside or outside?” Asks the skipper on the boat trip we have booked. If we sit outside, we have to stay in our seats for the entire trip, so there is no danger of falling off the boat when he maneuvers around the icebergs. “Outside” we answer him, because the sky is blue and the air is clear.

A world of icebergs in Ilulissat.

Louise smiles, “I’d like to say that you have to remember winter clothes for these trips. When the boat was stationary, it was cold in the jackets we wore, which was enough on the mainland, but out among the icebergs it wasn’t enough. You could almost imagine it,” laughs Louise.

The temperature was just above freezing and we were surrounded by icebergs. The icebergs were towering. A world existed here that I have never seen before. It didn’t matter that we were freezing, but it’s still a reminder to pass on – remember warm clothes for Ilulissat.

A big shout out to the team at Travel by Heart for helping us out when we were stranded in Ilulissat due to weather and prevented from flying to Kangerlussuaq. Because they took care of the practical details, there was no stress – and new opportunities arose instead.
